About this site
Montana is a wreck on the reef off Bermuda, the remains of a Confederate blockade runner that hit the reef in 1863 and sank in 9.1 metres (30 feet) of water. The bow is still recognisable, the engine stands upright like a monument, and the paddle wheels form ghostly circles on the seabed.
A second wreck, the schooner Constellation, lies almost on top of it. She sank in 1942 carrying war supplies and came to rest just 15 metres (50 feet) from the Montana, so two wrecks from different centuries are woven together by history and reef. Their story inspired the novel The Deep.
