About this site
The MS Mikhail Lermontov was a Soviet cruise liner that struck rocks and sank in the Marlborough Sounds off the South Island of New Zealand in 1986, after its pilot took it through a narrow passage near Cape Jackson. It now lies on its side in Port Gore, making it one of the largest diveable cruise ship wrecks in the world, spanning well over 150 metres. The site reaches a maximum depth of around 40 metres and is rated an advanced dive, with many divers penetrating sections of the hull and superstructure. Currents and limited visibility inside the wreck add to the challenge, and it draws wreck divers specifically for its size and the penetration opportunities it offers.
