About this site
Nohoch Nah Chich is a flooded cave system in the Riviera Maya region of Quintana Roo, Mexico, part of the extensive network cut into the limestone of the Yucatan Peninsula near Tulum. Its name means "big birdhouse" in Yucatec Maya, and it was once considered one of the longest surveyed underwater cave systems in the area. Access is typically through a cenote entrance, with divers passing through freshwater before reaching a halocline and clearer saltwater below. The system reaches depths of up to about 119 metres, though the site is rated beginner overall, reflecting the shallower cavern and cave sections commonly dived here.
