About this site
Oregon, the RMS Oregon, is a wreck lying upright in about 125 ft (38 m) of water off New York. She was a former Cunard steamship 521 ft (159 m) long that sank after a night collision with an unknown ship in 1886. She held the Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic crossing in 1884, and was one of the first ships with electric lighting.
The ship is slowly being claimed by the sea, but several prominent pieces are still clearly visible. These include the massive boilers, a large steering quadrant, the propeller, the bow section and the triple-expansion steam engine, which is so large a diver can swim through it.
Artifacts and sand. Divers were allowed to search the Oregon for artifacts for years, and as sand buries her those have become scarce. Most of what can be seen is expected to be gone within a generation.
