About this site
The USS San Diego lies off the coast of New York, in the waters south of Long Island near Fire Island. It was an armored cruiser that sank in 1918 after striking a mine laid by a German U-boat, making it the only major US warship lost in that manner during World War I. The wreck now sits at a maximum depth of around 30 metres and is generally rated an intermediate dive. Divers have also reported collapsing internal decks and overhead diving conditions inside the deteriorating structure, so care around the hull's interior spaces is warranted.
