Palancar Caves

Palancar Caves is part of the larger Palancar Reef system off the southwest coast of Cozumel in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Despite the name, it is known more for its swim-through coral formations, arches, and tunnels than true caves, cut into a wall that drops along the island's protected leeward side. The site reaches a maximum depth of around 30 metres and is rated an intermediate dive, with the reef top shallower and the wall dropping past 25 to 30 metres, benefiting from the clear water and steady current common to Cozumel's drift dives. Divers can expect sponges, gorgonians, and reef fish typical of the Mesoamerican Reef, along with the occasional turtle or larger pelagic passing along the drop-off. The swim-throughs and depth range suit divers with some experience, though guided drift diving is standard practice around Cozumel.
