About this site
Racha Yai is an island south of Phuket in the Andaman Sea, a popular day-trip dive and snorkel destination from Chalong or Patong. The site sits over a reef bottom, reaching a maximum depth of around 12 metres, with light current and great visibility, making it a solid choice for beginners. Barracuda, nudibranchs, and triggerfish are common on the reef, and divers have also reported a long list of other sightings here, including batfish, clownfish, cuttlefish, frogfish, octopus, parrotfish, lionfish, and even whale sharks and manta rays passing through. Smaller finds such as harlequin shrimp, mantis shrimp, and garden eels have been noted too, alongside stonefish and scorpionfish for those looking closely at the reef structure.
