About this site
Sombrero is a pinnacle dive site off the Guanacaste coast of northwestern Costa Rica, in the Pacific waters near the Papagayo peninsula, typically reached by boat from towns such as Playas del Coco or Culebra Bay. The site tops out over a sand bottom and reaches a maximum depth of around 25 metres, rated a beginner dive. Eagle rays, manta rays, octopus, nudibranchs, harlequin shrimp, and seahorses are regularly seen here, and divers have also reported garden eels, moray eels, parrotfish, pufferfish, scorpionfish, and stingrays around the pinnacle. Conditions can be exposed to weather, with rough swell and southerly currents reported at times, so it pays to check the sea state before heading out.
