About this site
The Southern Small Detached Reef sits among the outer reef systems of the far northern Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of Cape York Peninsula in Queensland. This section of the reef is well offshore, accessible mainly by liveaboard, in a remote stretch of the Coral Sea shelf edge. Divers visiting this stretch of the outer reef have reported whale shark sightings here, though encounters are occasional rather than something to count on.
