Rainbow Reef

Rainbow Reef sits within the Great Barrier Reef system off the far northern Queensland coast, well north of the more commonly visited Cairns and Port Douglas dive areas. This section of reef, near Lizard Island and the Ribbon Reefs, is reached mainly by liveaboard given its distance from the mainland. It is rated a beginner dive with a maximum depth of around 30 metres, and divers have reported clownfish, fusiliers, garden eels, parrotfish, and lizardfish along the reef, with larger visitors such as manta rays, tuna, trevally, barracuda, and even whales also noted. Divers have mentioned leaf scorpionfish and octopus tucked into the reef structure as well. Some sources flag darkness, navigation challenges, and decompression risk if depth limits are exceeded as hazards worth keeping in mind here.
