Sponge Reef lies off Maratua, one of the atolls in the Derawan archipelago along the coast of East Kalimantan, Indonesia. This part of the Celebes Sea is known for its reef systems and channels linking small islands, reached by boat from the villages on Maratua. The site reaches a maximum depth of around 30 metres.
