The SS Clifton lies in Lake Huron off the Michigan coast, out from the Thumb area near Port Austin. It was a steel-hulled steamer that sank in a storm in the early twentieth century while carrying a cargo of gypsum, going down with its crew lost. The wreck sits in Lake Huron's cold, deep water, which tends to preserve iron and steel hulls well compared to saltwater sites.
