About this site
The SS Kamloops lies off Isle Royale in Lake Superior, on the United States side of the lake near the Canadian border. She was a Canadian package freighter that vanished in a December storm in 1927 with all hands lost, and her wreck was not located until decades later off Isle Royale's Twelvemile Beach area. The ship rests broken on a steep slope in cold, deep water, with parts of the wreck reaching depths beyond 60 metres, making it a dive reserved for technical or advanced divers due to the depth and the near-freezing temperatures of Lake Superior. The site is also known among wreck divers for preserved human remains sometimes visible near the hull, a consequence of the lake's cold, low-oxygen water.
