About this site
The SS Laurentic was a White Star Line steamer requisitioned as an armed merchant cruiser during the First World War, sunk in January 1917 by mines laid by a German U-boat off Lough Swilly, County Donegal. She was carrying a large consignment of gold bullion at the time, which led to extensive Royal Navy salvage operations over the following years, one of the largest gold recovery efforts of its era. The wreck lies broken up on a seabed of wreckage near the mouth of Lough Swilly, reaching a maximum depth of around 40 metres, in cold Atlantic water typical of this stretch of the Ulster coast. It is rated a technical dive, reflecting both the depth and the exposed conditions of this part of Donegal.
