The Crack

The Bay of Ghoubbet sits at the western end of the Gulf of Tadjoura in Djibouti, a nearly enclosed body of water connected to the gulf by a narrow strait and fed by volcanic and tectonic activity along the surrounding shoreline. The area lies within the Afar depression, one of the few places where a mid-ocean ridge system reaches above sea level, and the dark, rugged basalt terrain continues underwater along the bay's edges. Access to dive sites here typically comes by boat out of Djibouti City or from camps along the gulf.
