About this site
Thomas Reef sits in the Strait of Tiran, off the Sinai coast near Sharm El Sheikh, close to the other named reefs of the strait such as Jackson, Woodhouse and Gordon. It is a coral pinnacle rising from deep water at the mouth of the Gulf of Aqaba, exposed to the currents that sweep through the strait between the Sinai and Saudi Arabian shorelines. Boats from Sharm El Sheikh reach it as part of Tiran itineraries, often combined with a drift along one or more of the neighbouring reefs. The reef bottom reaches a maximum depth of around 25 metres, and it is rated an advanced dive with strong current and generally great visibility. Divers can expect eagle rays, surgeonfish, and tuna, with barracuda, hammerheads, leopard and zebra sharks, manta rays, reef sharks, snapper, and trevally also reported here. Counter currents, strong currents, and shipping traffic have all been noted as hazards at the site.
