About this site

Palancar de Tormentos, usually called Tormentos, sits along the southwest coast of Cozumel within the island's marine park, part of the same reef system that runs down toward Palancar and Colombia. It is a coral spur and groove formation typical of Cozumel's leeward wall dives, run as drift dives by boat out of San Miguel. The reef bottom tops out at a maximum depth of about 18.1 metres, and current here is generally light, making it a beginner-rated dive rather than the more demanding drifts found elsewhere on the island. Grouper, moray eels, nurse sharks, and snapper are regularly seen along the reef, and divers have also reported angelfish, barracuda, eagle rays, lobster, parrotfish, pipefish, pufferfish, and sea turtles here. Sponges and coral heads shape the swim-throughs and channels that give the site its structure.
