About this site
The USCGC Duane is a former US Coast Guard cutter sunk deliberately in 1987 as an artificial reef off Key Largo in the Florida Keys. Commissioned in 1936, it served in convoy escort duty during the Second World War before being decommissioned and prepared for reef use. The wreck sits upright with a maximum depth of around 36.6 metres, now rated a technical dive, and visibility on the site is typically great. Barracuda, bull sharks, and grouper are regularly encountered here, with divers also reporting moray eels and sea turtles along the hull. Strong currents have been reported at the site as well, so conditions can turn challenging with little warning. Its sister ship, the Bibb, lies nearby, and the two are often dived on the same trip out of Key Largo.
