About this site
USS Arkansas was a battleship sunk during the 1946 Operation Crossroads nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, one of several target vessels assembled to study the effects of atomic weapons on naval ships. It went down at the atoll's lagoon anchorage after the Baker test, an underwater detonation that inverted the ship and drove it to the bottom in dramatic fashion. The wreck lies deep in the lagoon, and diving Bikini Atoll generally requires liveaboard access given the atoll's remoteness in the central Pacific. Diving here is considered advanced, both for the depths involved with the sunken fleet and for the logistics of reaching such an isolated location.
