About this site
Midway Atoll sits in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, and Eastern Island is one of the two main islets forming the atoll, within the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. The USS Macaw was a rescue and salvage vessel that ran aground and sank near the entrance channel in the early 1940s while attempting to assist a grounded submarine. Diving in this remote area is tightly controlled and only accessible through the small number of permitted expeditions to Midway.
