Gordon Reef is the first of the four reefs in the Straits of Tiran, met as you sail from Sharm El Sheikh toward Tiran Island. It is a drift dive along a coral garden and reef wall with coral pinnacles, swim-throughs and caves.
Depths run from about 5 to 40 m (16 to 131 ft). The shallower parts have coral gardens and the deeper sections have coral walls where reef sharks and eagle rays may pass. Butterflyfish, angelfish and parrotfish live in the coral, and white-tip reef sharks, morays, octopus and turtles are listed here. The reef is known for a spot called the Shark Observatory.
Current can be strong, with a strong current at the southwest corner and downward currents, and there is surface swell on the windward side while the southern side is sheltered. Fire coral grows here and shipping traffic is a hazard. The site is rated intermediate.
