About this site
The three-masted schooner Albemarle was driven ashore just west of Point Au Sable, today's Point Nipigon, in a November storm after only 4 months after into service. Much of her gear was recovered that month, and her iron ore was largely recovered the following year. Shifting sands cover and uncover this wreck, but the centerboard box still rises from the bottom surrounded by a pile of iron ore. This site is frequently viewed by kayaks and is a great snorkle site, but is far enough offshore to require a boat for access. Lies in about 3 m; sank 1867.
