About this site
The J.H. Outwaite was a bulk steamer in the iron ore trade. In the Great Storm of 1905, she was downbound off Mackinaw when she lost her steering, and eventually she grounded off today's Point Nipigon. The crew built a fire to warm themselves through the night, and then made their way to shore in the morning. Their fire flared up after they departed and burned the vessel to the waterline. The anchors, engines, and boilers were salvaged, and the shifting sands cover much of the wreck. Lies in about 9.1 m; sank 1905.
