About this site
The Carnatic is a British P&O steamship that struck Sha'ab Abu Nuhas reef and sank in 1869 while sailing from Suez to Bombay, making it one of the older wrecks in the northern Red Sea. It lies on its side off Shadwan Island, broken into two main sections, with a maximum depth of around 32 metres and rated as a beginner dive on a wreck bottom. Grouper and lionfish are common on the site, and divers have also reported barracuda, glassfish, jacks and amberjacks, and stingrays around the structure. Soft corals and glassfish cover much of the old wooden hull, and its age and fragility limit penetration, but the structure sits alongside several other well known wrecks on the same reef, making it a popular stop combined with other sites on Red Sea boat trips out of Hurghada.
