Castle Rock lies in Nusa Tenggara Timur, in the waters of eastern Indonesia's Lesser Sunda chain, over a rocky bottom that reaches a maximum depth of around 35 metres. It is rated an advanced dive due to strong and often unpredictable currents, with good visibility typical on the site. Divers regularly encounter barracuda, batfish, eagle rays, fusiliers, mackerel, manta rays, humphead wrasse, surgeonfish, trevally, and tuna, and some have also reported bumphead parrotfish, groupers, hammerhead sharks, jacks, nurse sharks, reef sharks, snapper, and bannerfish. The current here can shift quickly and produce downcurrents and eddies, and a negative entry is sometimes used to get divers down through the surface conditions before the drift begins.
