About this site
Cenote Azul lies on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, in the cenote-studded stretch of Quintana Roo near Tulum and the Riviera Maya. It is a shallow, water-filled sinkhole with a maximum depth of around 5 metres, making it a beginner-friendly dive, and visibility here is generally excellent. The limestone geology of this part of the peninsula is what gives rise to the region's many cenotes, of which this is one. Divers have also reported a hydrogen sulfide cloud at depth along with overhead sections, so care around those areas is worth keeping in mind even on an otherwise easy dive.
