About this site

Chankanaab is a shore diving and snorkeling site on the west coast of Cozumel, within Chankanaab National Park, south of San Miguel town. The park sits on the sheltered leeward side of the island facing the Cozumel channel, and the shallow rocky and sandy area near shore includes a submerged statue feature used by divers and snorkelers. It is a beginner site over a reef bottom, reaching a maximum depth of around 12.8 metres with light current, and its managed access within the park means easy entry from the beach rather than a boat drop. Snapper are a regular sight on the reef, and divers have also reported angelfish, eagle rays, lobster, moray eels, nurse sharks, parrotfish, scorpionfish, sea turtles, stingrays, surgeonfish, triggerfish, and wrasse around the site. A halocline has also been noted here by at least one source.
