About this site
Gunkan Iwa (軍艦岩) is a shore-entry wall site on the Echizen coast of Fukui, with a maximum depth of 26 m and an average around 18 m. About 50 m offshore the bottom drops off to 26 m, and from there a huge rock rises to break the surface, its underwater profile typical of the Echizen coast. Current at times; intermediate and above. Resident fish are plentiful around the rock, including Asian sheepshead wrasse and pinecone fish, with nudibranchs, squid, seasonal tropical visitors and passing pelagics.
