About this site
The Edmund Fitzgerald lies in Canadian waters of Lake Superior, near Whitefish Bay close to the border between Michigan and Ontario. The freighter sank in a November 1975 storm while carrying iron ore pellets, a loss that became widely known through subsequent investigation and popular memory of the wreck. The site sits at a maximum depth of around 150 metres and is rated a technical dive. Because of that depth and the cold, deep water of Lake Superior, the wreck itself has been dived only rarely, largely by technical and exploratory teams rather than typical charter operations.
