SS Edmund Fitzgerald

The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was a large Great Lakes freighter that sank in a severe November storm on Lake Superior in 1975, with the loss of its entire crew of 29. It lies near Whitefish Point, on the Canadian side of the lake, at a depth of around 160 metres, well beyond recreational diving limits. Because of the depth, cold, and the fact that it is treated as a gravesite, recreational dives on the wreck itself are not conducted, and exploration has been limited to a small number of research and remotely operated vehicle expeditions. The wreck lies broken into two main sections on the lake bed. It remains one of the most well known shipwreck stories on the Great Lakes, memorialized in maritime history and popular song rather than as an active dive destination.
