Malpelo Island sits in the eastern Pacific roughly 500 kilometres off the Colombian mainland, an isolated volcanic outcrop that forms the core of Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary. Dive sites around the island, including formations like El Altar de Virginia, are only accessible by liveaboard after an open ocean crossing from Buenaventura. The waters here are known for pelagic encounters given the island's remote position at the meeting point of strong oceanic currents.
