About this site
El Hierro is the westernmost and youngest of the Canary Islands, and its coastline drops steeply into deep Atlantic water as a result of the island's volcanic origin. El Bajon lies off this shore, on a rocky bottom shaped by the volcanic ridges and drop-offs typical of the island rather than the flatter reef systems found elsewhere in the archipelago. It is rated a technical dive to around 45 metres, with light current and great visibility, though divers have also reported strong currents at times. Barracuda, grouper, manta ray, nudibranch, octopus, and tuna are regularly encountered here, and divers have also reported dentex, eagle ray, mackerel, snapper, whale, and even whale shark passing through.
