About this site
El Tunel lies off the coast of Cancun in Quintana Roo, on the Caribbean side of the Yucatan Peninsula, a stretch of shoreline known for its limestone reef formations. The site sits over a reef bottom to a maximum depth of around 17 metres, rated an intermediate dive, with visibility generally described as great. Eagle rays, nurse sharks, and stingrays are common here, and divers have also reported barracuda, moray eels, reef sharks, and sea turtles on the reef. It is typically reached by short boat trips from the Cancun hotel zone or nearby marinas.
