About this site
Fessej Rock, also written Fezzej Rock and known locally as Black Rock, is an offshore rock formation located south of Mgarr Harbour on Gozo, rising 15 metres above the water's surface offshore from the Mgarr ix-Xini inlet. The rock is surrounded by numerous boulders that extend beneath the surface, creating a varied rocky terrain that shelters a wide diversity of marine life.
The site reaches a maximum depth of 15 m, with the bottom composed of rock and scattered boulders. The boulder field around the main rock provides complex structure and cover across the dive, making it well suited to thorough exploration at a single depth band.
The marine life recorded at Fessej Rock includes dusky groupers, barracudas, amberjacks, tunas, dentex, saddled breams, common octopuses, lobsters, black squat lobsters, and tube worms. Visibility at the site is generally good.
