MV Karwela

The MV Karwela is a wreck at Xatt l-Ahmar on the south-east coast of Gozo, Malta. She was a passenger ferry that worked around the Grand Harbour and was scuttled in August 2006, together with the MV Cominoland, as an artificial reef for divers.

The wreck is about 50 m (164 ft) long and sits perfectly upright on a sandy bottom. The bow lies at 39 m (128 ft) and the stern at 41 m (135 ft), and the top deck with the captain's cabin starts at 30 m (98 ft), so this is a deep dive for advanced and technical divers. It can be dived from the shore or by boat, and the site is sheltered from northern winds.

Openings were cut in the hull before sinking, so the wreck is considered safe to penetrate, with three decks to explore. Large holes run along the sides of the first two decks, and a photogenic staircase in the middle leads down to the lower deck, which is lit by portholes. There is only a little silt and sand inside.
