Fujikawa Maru

The Fujikawa Maru is one of the best known wrecks of Chuuk Lagoon, a Japanese armed transport ship sunk during the American air raid Operation Hailstone in February 1944. The wreck sits upright on the lagoon floor off Etten Island, with its deck around 18 metres and the bottom near 34 metres, and the site is rated an advanced dive. Its holds still contain aircraft parts, and the engine room, kitchen, and gun mounts are popular swim-throughs. The hull and superstructure are heavily encrusted with coral growth, and divers commonly see reef fish, sponges, and larger pelagics passing over the site. It remains a centerpiece of Chuuk's wreck diving, valued for the combination of intact wartime cargo and coral colonization.
