Herradura lies along the coastline near Mahahual on the Yucatan Peninsula's Costa Maya, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, facing the Caribbean Sea. The site sits along the barrier reef system that runs down this coast, with dive operations typically launching from the small town of Mahahual itself. It is a reef dive to a maximum depth of around 17 metres, rated intermediate. Divers have reported moray eels, nurse sharks, and reef sharks around the reef here.
