About this site
HMS Audacious was a British dreadnought battleship that struck a German mine off the coast of County Donegal near Malin Head in October 1914, early in the First World War. Efforts to tow her back to Lough Swilly failed and she eventually capsized and sank, one of the earliest major Royal Navy losses of the war. The wreck now lies in deep water off the north coast of Ireland, well offshore from the Inishowen peninsula. Given the depth and open Atlantic location, it is generally considered a dive for those with technical or deep-diving experience rather than a casual excursion.
