About this site
HMS Russell was a British pre-dreadnought battleship that sank in 1916 after striking mines off Malta, and its wreck now lies off the coast near Marsaskala on the island's southeastern side. Given the scale of a battleship of that era, the site is a substantial one, resting broken on the seabed at a maximum depth of around 110 metres. The dive is rated technical, well beyond recreational limits, and is visited mainly by trimix-qualified divers rather than the general recreational diving public. Malta's wider reputation for wreck diving owes a good deal to sites like this one.
