Kal's Dream

Kal's Dream is a submerged pinnacle in open water off Pura island in the Pantar Strait, Alor. It is the signature site of the area and is swept by current on both tides.

Divers hook in on the ridge at 20 to 30 metres and watch schools of bigeye trevally, rainbow runners and barracuda pass. Grey reef sharks patrol the deep side, dogtooth tuna are seen, and hammerheads or threshers appear occasionally below.

The current is extra strong, and down-currents are possible on exposed pinnacles like this one. The site is dived only at slack water, by experienced divers with Advanced Open Water certification, drift experience and comfort with a reef hook and surface marker buoy. Visibility in the strait runs 15 to 30 metres and the water is 24 to 28C at the surface, with thermoclines that can drop it below 20C for part of a dive, most noticeably from July to September.
