About this site
Sometimes called the Twin Peaks, Koh Tachai Pinnacle is a submerged reef north of the Similans that is known for big fish and big current in equal measure. The top of the pinnacle sits at around twelve metres and slopes off into the blue on all sides, and its exposed position in open water turns it into a magnet for anything that hunts the current. Dense schools of barracuda, trevally and rainbow runners wheel over the top, leopard sharks rest on the surrounding sand, and Napoleon wrasse and dogtooth tuna patrol the edges. In season the site draws reef mantas and passing whale sharks, and the reef itself is dressed in soft coral and anemones. The same exposure that feeds the site makes it demanding. When the current is running it can be fierce, so Koh Tachai is treated as an advanced dive and is usually timed and guided around the tide.
