Koshimoda Saku Ne

Koshimoda Saku Ne (小下田・サク根) is a boat-dive site about 15 minutes from Yagisawa harbour, directly off the Koibito headland at Toi, Izu, on the west coast of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka, for advanced divers, with strong current at times and frequent rough seas except in light easterlies. Two awash rocks mark a reef about 140 m long running east to west; the west side drops off to 70 m, the east side is cut by large crevices and falls to 35 m, and a crack the size of a cave south-west of the rocks at about 35 m holds sweepers and longtooth grouper over 1 m. Water flow is strong and fish life dense, with surgeonfish, takabe, chicken grunt, jack and damselfish on the west slope and sakura anthias and anthias to the north, amberjack, yellowtail amberjack and eagle rays from June to November, soft coral over most of the reef, and the occasional thresher shark and rare angelfish; it is a demanding site that needs a conservative plan.
