Yagisawa Oka Fish Reef

Yagisawa Oka Fish Reef (八木沢・丘魚礁) is a boat-dive site off Yagisawa at Toi, Izu, on the west coast of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka, from beginner level, with rare strong current in summer and otherwise calm unless the wind is from the south. Opened in 1992 and named to distinguish it from the offshore Yagisawa reef, it consists of 1.5 m concrete block reefs and boulders on sand between 20 m and 13 m around the mooring buoy. The blocks carry whip gorgonians with ghost gobies and stinging hydroids, lionfish, moray eels, grouper, morwong, hawkfish and anemonefish, the sand holds stingrays, flathead and flounder, summer to autumn brings schools of cardinalfish, jack, chicken grunt and takabe with amberjack and yellowtail amberjack hunting baitfish, and the shallow rock pile is always busy with striped beakfish, largescale blackfish, anthias and cardinalfish; care over sand and sea urchins is needed.
