About this site
Mitate Wreck (見立 沈船) is a boat-dive site at Mitate on Sado Island, Niigata, five minutes from the harbour, with a maximum depth of 27 m and an average around 18 m. Two vessels were sunk here as artificial reefs, the 70-ton Fudo Maru and the 40-ton Yunagi, and on clear days the whole 30 m hull is visible at once; the wrecks lie at about 25 m and can often be seen from the boat. Usually calm with strong current at times; suitable from beginner level. Horse mackerel, sheepshead wrasse, blennies, damselfish and octopus live around the wrecks, along with a single resident pinecone fish.
