Naeco

The Naeco was a tanker torpedoed by a German U-boat in 1942 off the coast of North Carolina, part of the wave of merchant shipping losses along the Atlantic seaboard during World War II. It now lies broken on the seabed off the Outer Banks, in an area often called the Graveyard of the Atlantic due to the concentration of wartime and storm wrecks in these waters. The wreck sits at a maximum depth of around 42.9 metres and is rated a technical dive, typically reached by boat from ports such as Morehead City or Beaufort. Visibility on the site is generally great, and the bottom around the debris is wreckage itself rather than open sand or reef. Divers have also reported a tiger shark on the wreck, though sightings like this are not a given on every dive. Given the depth and the offshore setting influenced by the Gulf Stream, it is a dive reserved for those with technical training.
