About this site
The Papoose is a tanker sunk by a German U-boat in 1942 off the coast of North Carolina, part of the concentration of World War Two wrecks known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic. It lies broken on a sandy bottom off Cape Lookout at a max depth of around 36.8 metres, and is usually reached by boat out of Morehead City or Beaufort. Visibility on the wreck is typically great, and tiger sharks have been documented around the structure along with the baitfish and reef fish that gather on the wreckage. It is rated an intermediate dive, with depth and the offshore boat run making it better suited to divers with some experience rather than newcomers.
