About this site
U-352 was a German Type VIIC U-boat sunk in May 1942 off the coast of North Carolina after attacking a Coast Guard cutter, the USCGC Icarus, which counterattacked with depth charges. The wreck lies roughly 25 to 30 metres deep off Morehead City, resting upright and largely intact though collapsed in places after decades underwater. It draws divers for its compact, penetrable conning tower area and its population of sand tiger sharks, along with encrusting corals and baitfish common to the offshore wrecks of this stretch of coast. Visibility and current can vary with the Gulf Stream's proximity, and depth combined with occasional current make it a dive best suited to those with some open-water experience rather than complete beginners.
