About this site
The Oryoku Maru lies in Subic Bay off Olongapo on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. It was a Japanese transport ship used to carry Allied prisoners of war, bombed by American aircraft in December 1944 while at anchor in the bay, an event tied to one of the more notorious hellship episodes of the Pacific war. The wreck now rests broken up on the bottom of Subic Bay and is visited as a wartime historical dive rather than a reef site. Because it lies in a working harbor area, visibility and conditions can vary considerably from one trip to the next.
