USS New York

The USS New York is an armored cruiser wreck in the inner harbour of Subic Bay, and the most requested and one of the most historic wrecks there. She was launched in the 1890s as the US Navy's second armored cruiser and was the most heavily armed, with six 8-inch guns. She was later renamed Saratoga and then Rochester, served in the Spanish-American War and World War I, and was decommissioned in 1933. In 1941 she was scuttled in the harbour to keep her out of Japanese hands.

The ship is 117 m (384 ft) long and lies on her port side at 16 to 30 m (55 to 100 ft), with her big guns and turrets intact and one giant propeller visible. Her mid-section is mangled, because the US Navy flattened it in the late 1960s to let deeper ships into the harbour. Advanced divers can explore the propeller, conning tower and deck. The mess deck has a 60 m (197 ft) swim with portholes overhead letting light in but no exit. Nitrox 36 is recommended.

Visibility varies with harbour movement, and incoming tides improve it. Silt can build up, and there is ship traffic.
