About this site
Race Rocks sits at the southern tip of Vancouver Island, near the entrance to Juan de Fuca Strait, and is marked by a lighthouse on the largest islet within what is now an ecological reserve. The area is known for strong tidal currents where the strait meets the Strait of Georgia, and it draws divers for its cold, nutrient rich water and the marine mammals, including seals and sea lions, that haul out on the rocks. Depths around the reserve vary considerably with the rugged rock formations, and the tidal flow through the area is significant enough that dive timing is usually planned around slack current. Because of this current, Race Rocks is generally considered a site for more experienced divers.
